Vietnam's Northern and Central regions are gearing up for a challenging season marked by further intense heatwaves and potential water shortages. The forecast for May to September predicts prolonged drought conditions, particularly in the Northern, Central, and Central Highlands areas, raising concerns about water availability in the coming months.

Heatwaves, such as experienced in April, are expected to be more frequent and severe than usual, with temperatures potentially reaching record highs. Alongside the heat, there's an increased risk of hailstorms and tornadoes, further complicating the situation.

Average temperatures are projected to be higher than usual throughout the summer months, with May experiencing temperatures one to two degrees Celsius above average, and June to September seeing increases ranging from 0.5 to one degree Celsius.

While the rainy season is anticipated to commence in May in certain regions, precipitation levels are forecast to remain similar to the yearly average in most areas, except for the Central Region, which may experience above-average rainfall.

Drought conditions are expected to persist in the Northern Central Highlands until mid-May, gradually improving thereafter. However, the Southern Central Highlands may see relief from drought conditions by the first half of May.

Despite some areas experiencing minor flooding, major reservoirs are projected to receive below-average inflows, posing challenges for water management and hydroelectric power generation.

As Vietnam prepares for the hot season ahead, efforts are underway to mitigate the impact of drought and ensure water security for affected regions.
