Vietnam to Inaugurate First Pediatric Organ Transplant Centre in Southern Region

Milestone Achievement Expected on 50th Anniversary of Liberation Day
Vietnam's southern region is set to mark a significant medical milestone with the completion and operation of the first pediatric organ transplant centre, scheduled to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 - 2025). The centre will be housed within Children's Hospital 2 in Ho Chi Minh City, a pioneer in pediatric transplants in the country.

Associate Professor Dr. Tang Chi Thuong, Director of the municipal Department of Health, announced on April 9 that the hospital has already performed 33 liver, 30 kidney, and 10 autologous stem cell transplants. The hospital conducted its first kidney transplant in 2004, followed by liver transplants a year later. Recently, the Ministry of Health recognized the hospital's qualification to remove and transplant kidneys and livers from both living and brain-dead donors.

The addition of this centre will enhance specialized healthcare for children in Ho Chi Minh City, complementing existing facilities such as the cardiovascular centre at Children's Hospital 1 and the cancer centre at the City Children's Hospital. This initiative signifies a major step forward in pediatric healthcare in Vietnam's southern region.
